Our big first grader. Ashton has done so well in school and we are so proud of him. He started school at reading level C and has been moved up to E already. His teacher is very impressed with how quickly he is excelling. His math skills are pretty good as he understands complex problems but we are working on quick thinking basic facts. He loves to do science problems and enjoys everything about school, well, mostly recess. We did have some issues at the beginning of school with him being goofy and feeling left out but he is now into the groove of things and has excellent behavior.
He is a fantastic bike rider and has gone to various dirt courses around town with his Dad or friends. It is great to live in a place where he has activities he loves close by. He did a couple races this summer but got beat by the older children on geared bikes. Once he grows a bit taller he will get a geared bike so he can compete easier.
He is one of the best players on the soccer team and has scored numerous goals this season. He seems to really enjoy being in the goal and if you missed one of his great saves he shows instant replays which are enjoyable to watch. Ashton is quick and has some advanced ball handling skills, like the slide kick, which just scares the other team (and his mom). He did get a penalty this season for tripping over another child who had fallen. I am pretty sure it was an accident but the other child made a huge deal of it. Ashton wanted to protest but instead stole the ball back as he is very assertive on defense.
Ashton was star of the week last week, the first in his class to go, so I will share what he brought to school. In his "box of treasures" he brought his drum and shaker from Africa (thanks Em!) -he likes to play music and make up songs, Pokemon cards and Bakugans- they are fun, his big blue bounce ball- it is the biggest ever!, chess board and pieces- loves chess and took lessons this summer from our neighbor, Eb, light-saber- he loves star wars, and his ball on a string yo-yo thing(from years ago, thanks Amy!)- just likes to play with the yo-yo. He also wanted to bring in pictures of things he likes to do but wouldn't fit in the box, like swimming, monkey bars, zoo with grandparents, bike racing, sledding, ice skating, riding bike to school (everyday he rides or walks), family collage, zucchini car from the race he won, rock climbing and of course, his mohawk. We also brought in his favorite pet, black widow, for his class to see. I babysat the spider so the cage didn't open. I think it was the highlight of the day as when the other students wrote letters to Ashton most wrote about black widow.

He is a great brother and does a wonderful job of helping out his siblings. He was sitting with Ry on the couch this morning and leaned over, hugged him, and said "I love you Rylan." It made my heart melt. Ashton will read books to the children and makes sure they aren't getting into harms way. He has brought Rylan home from the neighbors when the girls were being mean to him "because Ry didn't deserve to be made fun of".
Ashton is a great child with tons of energy directed into productive activities. We are so proud of all he has done and know that one day he will change the world.
