Ashton, 2nd Grade

I can't believe he is that old already. Yet again, Ashton has amazed us with his smarts. His conference was wonderful. It started with the positives and ended the same way. He is an amazing role model in school and really enjoys having the same teacher as last year.

His reading level went up over the summer to a 2.8 which is the beginning of 3rd grade. He is writing detailed book reports about books he reads to himself. I just found out that he goes to TAG (Talented and Gifted) 3 times a week. He didn't want to brag about himself so he never told his own parents. It is nice that he can sit on the couch and read stories to the little ones on his own now. His reading goal is to end the year at 3.8 or beginning of 4th grade.

In math he is excelling as well. He was asked to move up to 3rd grade mathletes and complete challenge work from his homeroom teacher. He picked up regrouping very quickly (he skipped 2nd grade math so we had to teach him that in one night) and has moved onto multiplication and division. He participates in the 3rd grade class like he has always been there. Grandpa even bought him DQ because he was the 1st one done (correctly) with an assignment. His math goal is to continue challenging himself, which he is doing a great job with so far.

Ashton gave a great presentation to his class on Black Widow. He did research on the internet, made a poster, and also made worksheets for the class to complete. He was able to answer all the questions his classmates asked. His presentation was excellent and everyone loved seeing Black Widow. We will use the same presentation for the learning fair at school this December.

Last year he got all 4's on his report card in music (his favorite class) and this year would like to get all 4's in PE. He thinks he is doing well so far. He got a PAWS for Applause for still participating even though he had a hurt elbow (He slid on the wood floor and over extended it the night before so it was stiff and sore but he was determined to participate in PE to earn his 4's. The teacher noticed him wincing during certain movements and asked him about it.)

During recess he plays with a variety of peers. His favorite games are four-square, football, and freeze tag. I have caught him climbing around the slides but he denies it for some reason, must not be cool to do that these days.
